One of the most critical gaps in care is that there has been no centralized location where survivors of domestic violence can access all the resources they need. Rather, domestic violence services and complimentary programs are dispersed throughout Orange County. The different offices can be difficult to access, which can create additional stress on someone trying to escape an already difficult situation. After 45 days, Patty learned that her request to transfer her job location had been approved by her employer. As she had been a successful participant in the Emergency Shelter's programs, Patty was eligible for Step Ahead. Laura's House operates on the philosophy that domestic violence is multi-dimensional and often cyclical in nature and must be addressed through a range of interventions. Our goal is to provide supportive service programs that will prepare our clients and their children to live independent and violence free lives. Laura’s House provides unduplicated domestic violence-related services to the 915,000 residents of Orange County, California and beyond.

Provides transitional housing (3-6 months) and supportive services extend the amount of time for clients to work towards overall stability and goal-oriented planning in their lives. As of now, the Power of the Journey campaign has amassed $6 million of its $10 million goal. She met weekly with her case manager and therapist during her stay. Her younger daughter participated in "Building Blocks" therapeutic preschool each morning while she attended group. Her fifth grade daughter travled to the local public school and returned to the Shelter in time for "Kid's Club" to complete her homework. From the administrative side, the new building had to be in a more easily accessible central location, provide enhanced security, enhanced training capacity, and space to expand existing programs. In 1991, a few local women formed the South Orange County Domestic Violence Action Committee with the dream of building a shelter for battered women in South County. After being contacted by Laura's mother and hearing that Laura had nowhere to turn to for resources to help her, the women were committed to making their dreams become a reality.

Without intervention and education programs, victims of domestic violence find it extremely difficult to break the cycle of coercion and abuse that have become the norm in their lives. In addition, the new facility would be a place where the community could gather to learn more about the epidemic of domestic abuse, through classes, training and awareness events. By reducing risk factors and providing the information, education, life skills and support Laura's House is able to break the cycle of domestic violence and empower victims to move beyond the abuse and live fulfilling lives. Yet despite the progress Laura’s House has made to assist those most in need of help, there continues to be unmet needs that must be addressed.
